Anvir Safaris · Kenya
Most safari companies sell East Africa. We share it. We were born here. This is our home; and when you travel with us, you are not a tourist. You are a guest.
"Kenya is where the word safari was born. It still knows what the word means."
The word is Swahili. It simply means journey. Long before it became an industry, before the lodges and the flight schedules and the packing lists, Kenya was where people came to understand what wilderness actually looked like. The landscapes Hemingway wrote about from a camp chair at dusk. The plains that the first wildlife photographers ever pointed a lens at. The mental image of Africa that most of the world still carries.
That wildness is still here. The Maasai Mara holds one of the highest concentrations of big cats anywhere in Africa. Three cheetahs, a leopard and two lion prides in a single morning is not unusual. It still leaves you wanting more. Drive four hours north and the landscape changes entirely. Samburu is a different ecosystem, a different palette, a different set of animals. The Samburu Special Five. None of them appear on the standard circuit.
The coast is its own conversation. Lamu is an ancient port town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where donkeys still carry the freight and the buildings have stood for six centuries. Diani is white sand and warm water and the kind of quiet that follows a week in the bush. Watamu is lively, colourful and proud of it. Three places, one coastline, nothing in common except the Indian Ocean.
What surprises most first-time visitors is how quickly Kenya feels familiar. It is a country that accommodates. There is always more here than you found on the last visit.
Kenya offers more distinct safari ecosystems than almost anywhere else on the continent. Here are the places that define every Anvir Kenya journey.
The moments Anvir builds into your Kenya itinerary that you won't find on a standard tour.
Between July and October, nearly two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle cross from Tanzania into Kenya's Maasai Mara. The Mara River crossings, when thousands surge the crocodile-filled water at once, are considered one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. We position you in a private camp with guides who know the crossing points, and time everything around the season, not a fixed schedule.
At first light, the Mara is a different world. A private balloon ride drifts you silently above the migration herds, the Mara River and the acacia-dotted plains. You see Kenya from the angle no vehicle can reach. A bush breakfast follows, served in the wild. One of the most requested experiences on earth. We handle every detail.
Orphaned baby elephants raised by keepers who sleep beside them at night, each with a name, a keeper, and a story. Noela personally recommends this as a must-do for many Anvir Kenya itineraries. When used to open a safari, it sets a tone for the rest of the journey that guests consistently say they didn't expect.
Africa's first community-owned elephant sanctuary, run entirely by the Samburu people in northern Kenya. Reteti is raw, genuine, and deeply rooted in the local community that built it. Rescued elephants, community rangers, and a conservation story that belongs entirely to the people whose land these elephants share. A strong addition to any northern Kenya itinerary.
A helicopter repositioning between camps, or a dedicated flight over the Mara, the Rift Valley, or Amboseli, transforms the scale of Kenya from something you see on a drive into something you truly comprehend. The aerial perspective of the Migration, or Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds, is one of the most requested Anvir additions for clients travelling at a premium pace.
In the private conservancies of Laikipia, you can move through the bush in a way that most visitors to Kenya never experience: on horseback, at the same level as the wildlife, with no engine noise between you and the landscape. Ride alongside zebra, giraffe and even buffalo on the open plains. For experienced riders, this is Kenya at its most intimate.
Watamu, on Kenya's northern coast, is one of East Africa's premier deep sea fishing destinations. Marlin, sailfish and tuna in waters so rich they've made this a quiet legend among serious sport fishermen. A natural add-on for any safari that ends on the coast, and a wildly different way to experience Kenya's extraordinary range.
Great Migration crossing, Maasai Mara
Kenya's wildlife is present year-round. The season shapes the experience. Here's how to choose yours.
Dry season with short grass and superb game viewing across all parks. Calving season draws predators to the Mara and Amboseli. Fewer crowds than mid-year. Kilimanjaro views from Amboseli are clearest in January and February.
Kenya's green season. Landscapes are lush, rates are lower, and the bush feels genuinely private. Birdlife peaks. Game viewing remains strong in conservancies with off-road access. A good season for those who want solitude and don't mind the odd afternoon shower.
The Great Migration enters the Maasai Mara from July, with river crossings through October. The most sought safari window on earth. Book six months ahead for the best camps. Peak pricing, fully justified. The Mara in August stays with you.
Short rains arrive in November but clear quickly. December brings dry conditions and good game viewing. The festive season is ideal for families. Diani Beach is warm and calm. A natural pairing for a safari-and-coast journey before the year ends.
