Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife destinations, world-famous for being home to nearly half of the planet’s remaining mountain gorillas. Location

Bwindi lies in southwestern Uganda, on the edge of the Rift Valley. It borders the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and is close to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Coordinates: 1.044° S, 29.719° E.

• Distance from Kampala: ~520 km (a 9–10-hour drive by road).

• Nearest Town: Kabale, which serves as a staging point for safaris.

When to Visit

• Best Seasons for Gorilla Trekking:

  • June to September – Dry season, best hiking conditions.

  • December to February – Another dry season with excellent trekking weather.

• Rainy Seasons (March–May & October–November): The forest is lush and beautiful but trails are slippery, making trekking more challenging. Birdwatching, however, is at its best.

How to Get There

• By Road: 8–10 hours from Kampala/Entebbe. Many travelers stop at Lake Mburo or Queen Elizabeth National Park en route.

• By Air: Domestic flights from Entebbe or Kampala’s Kajjansi Airstrip to Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrips, followed by a 1–2 hour drive to park entry points.

• Gorilla Trekking: The main activity, divided among four sectors of the park: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each trek lasts 2–6 hours depending on gorilla movement.

Travel Tips

• Gorilla Permits: These are always required for trekking, book well in advance through Uganda Wildlife Authority or a tour operator.

• Fitness Level: Treks can be strenuous; moderate fitness is recommended.

• Clothing: Wear sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, a rain jacket, and gloves for grabbing vegetation.

• Pack Essentials: Carry water, snacks, insect repellent, and a walking stick (often provided).

• Photography: No flash when photographing gorillas.

• Altitude: The park sits between 1,160–2,607 meters; allow time to acclimatize.
