Tarangire National Park

Southwest of Arusha (about 120 km)

Overview

Tarangire National Park is often described as Tanzania’s hidden gem. Covering about 2,850 square kilometers, the park is renowned for its iconic baobab trees, vast savannah landscapes, and large elephant herds—the biggest in northern Tanzania. The Tarangire River, a permanent water source, draws wildlife in massive numbers during the dry season, creating one of Africa’s most spectacular game-viewing experiences. Despite being less famous than Serengeti or Ngorongoro, Tarangire offers a more intimate, less-crowded safari experience.

Why Visit Tarangire?

  • Elephant Capital of Tanzania: Home to thousands of elephants, including some of the largest herds in East Africa.

  • Unique Landscapes: Stunning baobab-studded plains and sweeping views of the Tarangire River valley.

  • Dry Season Spectacle: Between June and October, animals migrate here in huge numbers, including wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, and antelope.

  • Predators: Lions, leopards, and cheetahs are present, and wild dogs are occasionally seen.

  • Birdwatching Paradise: Over 500 bird species, including the endemic ashy starling and yellow-collared lovebird.

When to Visit

  • Best Time: June to October (dry season), when wildlife congregates around the Tarangire River.

  • Green Season: November to May brings lush scenery and excellent birding, though some wildlife disperses to surrounding areas.

  • Avoid April–May: Heavy rains can make some roads impassable.
