Samburu National Reserve

Samburu County, northern Kenya, about 350 km (217 miles) north of Nairobi

Overview of Samburu

Samburu National Reserve is a rugged and semi-arid wilderness located in northern Kenya, known for its dramatic landscapes, unique wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. Covering about 165 square kilometers, the reserve is smaller than other Kenyan parks but offers some of the most rewarding game viewing experiences. Its lifeline is the Ewaso Nyiro River, which attracts wildlife year-round and creates a striking contrast with the dry, open savannah and rocky hills. Samburu is famed for its “Special Five” or wildlife species rarely found in southern Kenya.

Location

Samburu lies in Samburu County, northern Kenya, about 350 km (217 miles) north of Nairobi, near the town of Archer’s Post. The reserve is adjacent to Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves, together forming a wider conservation area.
