Maasai Mara National Reserve

Narok County, Kenya; bordering Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to the south

Overview of Masai Mara

The Masai Mara National Reserve, often called “The Mara,” is one of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations, located in southwestern Kenya along the Tanzanian border. Spanning over 1,500 square kilometers, the reserve is part of the greater Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, a vast wildlife corridor famed for its rich biodiversity, stunning open savannahs, and the legendary Great Migration. Named after the Maasai people and the Mara River, the reserve is a year-round haven for safari lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers from across the globe.

Location

The Masai Mara lies in Narok County, about 270 km (167 miles) west of Nairobi. It borders Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to the south, with the Mara River running through its heart. The reserve’s coordinates are approximately 1.4061° S, 35.0422° E.
