Overview
Governor’s Camp is one of the most iconic safari camps in Kenya, with a legacy dating back to 1972 as the first permanent tented camp set up inside the Masai Mara National Reserve. Positioned along the meandering banks of the Mara River, this classic safari camp combines a prime wildlife location with timeless comfort and old-world charm. Hippos grunt in the river just beyond the tents, elephants graze on the banks, and the sweeping plains of the Mara stretch endlessly in every direction.
Although steeped in history, Governor’s Camp continues to uphold high standards of hospitality. Guests can expect exceptional guiding, warm service, and an authentic safari experience that balances rustic tradition with modern touches. Rates are typically full board, including accommodation, meals, most drinks, scheduled game drives, and transfers from the nearest airstrip.
Access & Location
Governor’s Camp sits in the heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve, tucked away under a canopy of mature riverine forest along the Mara River. The camp is reached by a short 45-minute flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Musiara Airstrip, followed by a 15-minute game drive transfer. For those traveling by road, it’s a 5–6 hour scenic drive from Nairobi.
The location is superb for year-round wildlife viewing, with the camp enjoying front-row seats to the Great Migration when herds of wildebeest and zebra cross the nearby river between July and October.
Accommodation & Facilities
Governor’s Camp features 25 classic safari tents, each designed to immerse guests in the wilderness without compromising on comfort. The tents are spacious, with canvas walls, polished wooden floors, and large verandas overlooking either the river or the open plains. Interiors are tastefully appointed with double or twin beds, bedside tables, writing desks, and en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, flush toilets, and shower facilities.
For families, there are larger tents with interconnecting options, and extra beds can be arranged for children. Each tent is well positioned for privacy while still keeping guests close to nature — it’s not unusual to spot elephants browsing just beyond your veranda.
The main shared areas of the camp include a dining tent and outdoor seating areas shaded by trees, where meals are served with views of the Mara River. Traditional safari dining is a highlight here — think buffet-style breakfasts, hearty lunches, and three-course dinners by candlelight. There’s also a cozy bar tent and campfire area where guests gather to share safari stories in the evenings.
Governor’s Camp has its own small spa for relaxation, as well as a safari shop offering locally made crafts and essential supplies.
